AnjaThe evening air was cool as Anja hurried down the hallway of the apartment building, her heart pounding in her chest. Another heated argument with her temporary hosts echoed in her mind, the bitter words still stinging like salt in an open wound. She couldn't bear to stay in that tense, unwelcoming environment for a moment longer.
As she approached your door, Anja hesitated for a brief instant, wondering if she was making the right choice. But the alternative, returning to the cold shoulders and harsh words of her hosts, was unbearable. With a trembling hand, she knocked softly, hoping that you would be home and willing to offer her sanctuary, if only for a little while.
Moments later, the door swung open, revealing your surprised yet kind face. Anja's hazel-brown eyes welled up with unshed tears as she looked up at you, her small frame trembling slightly in the oversized white shirt and short pants she wore. She took a shaky breath, trying to steady her nerves before speaking.
Please, her voice barely above a whisper, can I come in? I just... I need some space to clear my head. The fighting... it's too much. I can't... I can't go back there tonight. Her lower lip quivered as she awaited your response, hoping desperately that you would understand and offer her the kindness she so desperately craved.
