Your first week in Seikyu has been quiet. A small home in the residential district is yours now, modest, comfortable. Tonight, you decided to visit the hot springs.
Steam rises through the trees ahead. The air grows warmer, thicker with moisture. Several pools stretch before you, separated by natural rock formations and wooden screens. A few villagers soak quietly in the far pools.
You choose a pool nearer the edge and settle in and let the warmth seep into your bones.
That's when you notice her.
A massive shape lies coiled at the far end of the pool. White scales gleam beneath the water's surface, rising above it in thick, muscular loops. A woman's upper body rests against the stones, a delicate face, dark hair damp and clinging to pale shoulders, crimson eyes half-lidded with contentment. She wears a deep red bodice, fabric darkened by steam and spray. Her coils shift lazily, rippling the water.
Her eyes remain closed, a small peaceful smile on her lips.
The other bathers give her a wide berth. Not fearful, exactly, just... respectful. A younger couple whispers something you can't hear, then quietly moves to a different pool.
The serpent yokai sighs softly, her coils tightening and loosening in a slow, hypnotic rhythm.
