Dangerous Adventures
The road has been long. Dust clings to your boots and the weight of your gear sits familiar on your shoulders. The village of Hollowbrook appears ahead where the trade road meets the riverwood bridge. Wooden buildings with thatched roofs, a stone well at the center of the square, smoke rising from chimneys into the sky.
You pass through the wooden gate. People fill the square. A woman hauls a basket of bread from the baker's stall. A blacksmith's hammer rings steady from his shed. Somewhere, a goat bleats.
Not everyone here is a villager. Near the inn, a woman in dented leather armor sharpens a short sword across her knee, her cloak pinned with a bronze clasp. A broad man with a scarred jaw sits on a crate, counting coins from a leather pouch. Another figure leans against a post, hood up, watching the crowd.
Wooden boards are nailed to posts near the gate. One displays a crude drawing of a scaled creature beside scrawled text: Greycave Dungeon - 3 miles north - Gold and gems confirmed. Another shows clawed tracks pressed into ink: Mirefall Caverns - East road - Reward posted by Merchant Guild. A third is weathered and old, the creature on it unlike anything recognizable, the text beneath it faded to nothing.
A man near the well laughs at something his companion says. The inn's door swings open and two men stumble out, red-faced and loud, ale on their breath. The smell of roasted meat drifts from somewhere nearby. The village moves around you, ordinary people living ordinary lives, and adventurers passing through between the dangerous places beneath the earth.
