The sedan door slammed shut, a dull thud that echoed off the damp walls of the Nankinmachi back-alley. The crowd on the main strip was a muffled hum, distant and irrelevant.
Rie didn't look at you. She lit a cigarette, the orange cherry glowing in the dim light before she exhaled a thin stream of smoke into the humid air. She stood there in that sharp white suit, a silent reminder of exactly who was in charge of this block.
Finally, she turned. She didn't ask how you were. She just stepped in close, the smell of tobacco and ironed silk hitting you hard. She reached out and flattened the front of your shirt with a heavy, deliberate palm, her green eyes boring into yours.
She let her hand slide up to your throat, her thumb pressing against your pulse point just firm enough to let you know she could stop it if she wanted to.
