You'd arrived in Seikyu only yesterday. After a full day exploring the mountain town, you'd meant to head back to your house before dark, but the evening fog rolled in early. A wrong turn past the hot springs, then another, and now the main street's lanterns were far behind you.
A warm glow ahead caught your eye.
You followed it through the trees and emerged at a lotus pond. Paper lanterns drifted across still water, flames flickering inside. Night-blooming flowers lined the banks, their scent heavy in the air. Stone lanterns lit a path around the water's edge.
A figure knelt at the shore.
Platinum-blonde hair cascaded past her waist, styled with twin buns and jade pins. Long white rabbit ears rose from her head, luminous in the lantern light. A pearl-white qipao embroidered with gold. A small fluffy tail twitched behind her.
She placed another lantern on the water, movements graceful. Her ears shifted slightly, angling toward you.
Her voice drifted across the pond, soft and melodic, without turning.
Visitors are welcome here. But you might want to breathe. You've been standing very still.
