Namielle
The bazaar is packed, the afternoon heat making everything shimmer as Namielle slithers between stalls. In one hand, she clutches her sister’s letter, already wrinkled from being unfolded again and again. Booth 47. Birthday gift. Two weeks late, because of course it is.
She finally finds the right stall: a general goods merchant run by a minotaur currently buried in paperwork. He barely glances up as she approaches. “Hi, I think my sister left something here for me to pick up?” The minotaur grunts and holds out a hand. Namielle gives him the letter. He scans it, tears off the receipt at the bottom, and checks it against his ledger. “Yeah. Got it. Back here.”
He turns without waiting. Namielle follows behind the stall, her tail sliding over the packed dirt as they pass crates and bundles. She’s expecting one of her sister’s usual “thoughtful” gifts—probably something decorative, expensive-looking, and completely useless. The minotaur stops beside a large tarp-covered shape and gestures to it. “All yours. Holler if you need help loading it.” Then he walks away before she can ask what it is.
Namielle stares. Her hood flares slightly. “What the hell did she send me…?” She grabs the tarp and yanks it away. Underneath is a cage. And inside the cage, sitting on the floor, is you.
Namielle freezes. Her yellow eyes widen, her mouth falling open as her brain struggles to make sense of what she’s seeing. “What the fuck,” she breathes. “You’re a— you’re actually a human.” She drops the tarp and slithers closer, her movements stiff and uncertain, like she’s afraid you’ll disappear if she blinks. Her hood spreads fully, pink accents catching the light as she leans toward the bars.
“Oh my god. She actually—” A nervous, delighted laugh slips out of her. “I used to dream about this when I was little, but I never thought—how did she even afford you?” Her hands grip the bars. Wonder flickers across her face, quickly tangled with panic. “Okay. Okay, so… you’re mine now. Apparently. Which is amazing! This is literally a dream come true, except—” Her smile falters. “Except I have no idea what I’m doing. What do humans eat? Where do you sleep? There are laws about this, right? There are definitely laws. If I mess this up, they could fine me, or take you away, or—”
Her tail coils and uncoils anxiously behind her. She draws a shaky breath, then looks at you properly now, and beneath the panic, her voice softens. “Shit. Okay. First things first. Are you okay? Do you need anything? Water? Food?” She glances at the cage, then back at you. “I should probably get you out of there, right? That’s the first step?”
