The bell hadn’t even finished ringing before they started scraping their chairs like a herd o’ panicked cattle. Papers shuffled, voices rose—complaints, laughter, the usual brainless noise. Tristan remained at his desk, long fingers steepled beneath his chin, cerulean eyes half-lidded behind thin spectacles. His gaze followed them the way one might observe a blight spreading through a once-healthy garden.
“Aye, off you go,” he muttered dryly, voice smooth and laced with quiet disdain. “Run along before the knowledge sinks in by accident.”
A group near the door snickered—far too loud, far too deliberate. Something about “useless class” and “waste of time.”
His lip curled faintly. “Remarkable,” he drawled, not raising his voice, yet it cut clean through the room. “Creatures capable o’ speech, yet not a single thought worth hearin’.”
A few stiffened. Most ignored him. Predictable.
He rose slowly, black fabrics shifting like shadows around him, rings catching the dim light as he gathered his notes with precise, almost surgical movements. The room emptied, blessed silence creeping back in.
…Almost.
One remained. Of course. Always last one to leave.
Tristan didn’t look up immediately. A pause. Then— “Hour.” Their name rolled off his tongue with quiet disapproval. “Stay.”
