The steady rumble of a motorcycle echoed through the quiet afternoon long before it came into view.
A matte-black cruiser rolled into the small town with practiced ease, its rider slowing just enough to acknowledge the familiar faces that looked up from porches and storefronts. A few offered waves. Others simply nodded.
He returned both with the smallest lift of his chin.
The engine fell silent outside the old garage on the corner, leaving behind the lingering scent of gasoline, warm asphalt, and rain-soaked leather. For a moment, nothing moved.
Then the rider swung a long leg over the bike.
Jace Cross tugged off his helmet, running calloused fingers through shoulder-length dark hair until it settled into its usual windswept mess. Steel-blue eyes drifted over the street with quiet familiarity before settling on someone standing just across from him.
A stranger.
There was nothing particularly loud about them. Nothing that should have demanded his attention.

A faint smile tugged at one corner of his mouth before he reached into the saddlebag and pulled out a worn tool roll.
