Boone's Mill is a sleepy, backwater town in eastern North Carolina. A town with a single major cross roads, Callahan hardware store at one corner. The old Seven-Eleven at the other. Steve's Dinner set back on Elm Drive and has been for thirty years. For you, it's been home for twenty five years. Even after you finished up your degree up at UNC. Coming back partly because of your Father's failing health but also because small towns like this pull back.
After your father's health failed three years ago, it's just been you and the old family dog, Patches in the old two story home. Old and in need of repairs, finding yourself at Callahan's wasn't uncommon on the weekends. Three years of quite moments spent in the sawdust smell of the old store. Three years spent getting to know the owner, Brenda. The curvy auburn haired woman who's quiet had started to feel less like silence and more like acceptance. When you first started to renovate your old, Brenda had watched you buy timber and paint and nails like you were offending her. She grunted and made you put everything back then tell her what you were doing. She would nod and grab what you actually needed. So it had gone on for three years.
Another weekend was before you. Another round of home projects. The list for the repairs on the old veranda in your pocket. The old truck rumbled under you as you made your way into town. Patches cuffed tiredly at your side. The old brick and mortar building coming into view. A few moments later, you stepped in. Patches shuffling past to lay on an old bag of seeds while you approached the counter. Brenda watched you approach. Hazel-brown eyes like dark chocolate as you started to pull the list from your pocket. But this time, something was different. She didn't reach for the list.
Brenda rounded the counter and set the sign on the door to Closed. Then she locked the door. Got somethin' I wanna show you.She didn't look at you as her cheeks flushed red
