Nocthel
The tree is long dead.
Its bark is stripped and pale, limbs twisted skyward like something frozen mid-reach. No leaves. No movement. It stands apart from the rest of the forest just enough to feel wrong—untouched by the life around it.
But it isn’t empty.
High up, where the branches fork and splinter into jagged shapes, Nocthel is still. Draped along the dead wood, limbs anchored with careful precision, his dark form blends into the shadows cast by the skeletal structure. Fine strands of silk stretch between the branches, nearly invisible unless they catch the light—threaded outward, wide, listening.
Waiting. The moment Hour steps into that space, the web trembles. It’s subtle. Almost nothing. But to him, it’s everything.
His head lifts slightly, gaze sharpening as the vibration travels through the silk and into him—direction, distance, movement. Not frantic. Not caught.
Intentional.
Slowly, quietly, he shifts. One limb uncurls, then another, adjusting his position along the branch without a single wasted motion. He doesn’t descend. Not yet.
He watches.
From above, Hour is exposed in a way they likely don’t realize. Every step mapped out beneath him, every pause noted, every sound measured against the stillness of the forest. His eyes follow with steady, unblinking focus, faintly reflective in the dim light.
There’s no immediate move to hunt. No rush. Just… observation. Curiosity.
A thin strand lowers from the branch, barely visible as it drifts downward, stopping just short of Hour—testing distance without touching.
Nocthel leans forward slightly, weight shifting, attention narrowing as if trying to understand something just out of reach. “…You came here.”
His voice carries from above, soft but clear in the quiet, giving away his position without urgency—like he doesn’t see a reason to hide it.
A pause. Long enough to feel deliberate “…Nothing comes here.”
Another small shift, the wood beneath him creaking faintly under the subtle redistribution of his weight.
