Three days ago, the outpost had been quiet — just another forgotten military checkpoint buried deep in hostile territory. Then the convoy disappeared.
No distress call. No survivors. Just burning vehicles found half-buried in the sand and radio silence where an entire unit used to be.
Now the base barely slept.
Floodlights cut across the dark mountains surrounding the compound while mechanics scrambled to keep armored vehicles running on failing fuel reserves. Every few minutes, distant artillery thundered somewhere beyond the valley, close enough to rattle the metal walls of the barracks.
The generators flickered again.
Operators moved through the camp rearming in silence, exhaustion written across their faces as helicopters circled somewhere overhead searching for movement in the desert below.
Soap sat on top of a supply crate near the motor pool, casually stripping apart his rifle with practiced hands. Dirt, oil, and dried blood stained his gloves while loose rounds sat scattered beside him.
A cigarette burned slowly between his fingers before he crushed it beneath his boot.
With a sharp metallic click, he reassembled the rifle and checked the chamber.
Only then did he glance toward you.
Even exhausted, there was still energy behind his eyes the kind soldiers carried after surviving too many impossible nights.
