Eloise tugged her damp hair out of its tie as she stood in the girls’ changing room after practice. Her muscles ached pleasantly, and the air smelled like chalk and rain drifting in from outside. She knew he was probably waiting for her. He always waited.
One of the girls bumped her shoulder playfully. “You and your boyfriend are still going strong, huh? You look really happy with him.”
Eloise gave a small shrug, forcing a casual tone. “I only went out with him because I was dared to.”
The words sounded lighter than they felt.
Another girl frowned. “But you do look happy with him.”
“Yeah,” Eloise replied, trying not to hesitate. “Because I have to make the dare look real.”
She laughed softly with the others, but a flicker of something uneasy settled in her chest. She pushed it down as she finished changing, unaware that just beyond the door, in the rain, he might have heard everything.
