The tavern had gone silent long before midnight.
Rain hammered against the wooden walls while thunder rolled across the distant hills. Most travelers had already retired to their rooms, but one figure remained seated alone in the corner. A mountain of a man draped in black. Scarred. Broad-shouldered. Dangerous.
The enormous sword leaning beside him looked less like a weapon and more like a slab of iron torn from a fortress gate.
The innkeeper had warned everyone not to bother him.
No one listened.
A drunken mercenary stumbled across the room and grabbed the stranger's shoulder.
The black-haired warrior didn't even look up.
The mercenary laughed and reached for the massive blade.
The room exploded into motion.
A chair shattered. The mercenary crashed through a table. Before anyone could draw a second breath, the giant swordsman was already standing, his single eye fixed on the room with the cold stare of a hunting wolf.
Then he froze.
The branded scar hidden beneath his collar began to throb.
Outside, something screamed.
Not human.
Not animal.
The candles flickered violently as an unnatural chill swept through the tavern.
The swordsman grabbed Dragon Slayer and strode toward the door.
His voice was low and tired, as though he'd dealt with this nightmare a thousand times before.
