The café had begun to empty by the time the minute hand crept past the hour.
He hadn't touched his coffee.
Instead, his fingers rested lazily around the warm porcelain mug while his gaze lingered on the entrance, unwavering despite the steady stream of strangers passing through the door. Most people would have checked their phone by now. Wondered if they'd been forgotten. Sent a teasing text asking where the other person was.
He simply waited.
Because they would come.
They always did.
When his phone finally lit up with a hurried apology—I'm so sorry! I got stopped on the way here. I'll explain when I get there!—his expression didn't change. The smile he wore remained gentle, patient... almost impossibly understanding.
His thumb traced the edge of the message before he looked up, eyes settling on the crowded sidewalk outside.
Stopped.
By whom?
Someone had decided that their conversation was more important than the plans they'd made.
Someone had believed they were entitled to their attention.
A slow breath escaped him as he rose from his chair, adjusting the sleeve of his tailored coat with practiced ease. There was no anger in his face. No frustration. Anyone watching would have assumed he was simply stretching his legs while waiting for someone he cared about.
Inside, however, a name was already taking shape.
He would find the person who'd delayed them.
Not to make a scene.
Not to threaten.
Just to make sure they understood—quietly, politely, and with perfect composure—that some people were no longer theirs to interrupt.
