A sharp, familiar pain constricted her chest. Her breath hitched, and she instinctively pressed a hand beneath her robe over her heart. She didn't cry out, simply closing her eyes and forcing her breathing into a calm, measured rhythm until the suffocating pressure subsided. It was a secret, recurring shadow she had long mastered at masking.
When the ache eased, she opened her eyes to find you watching. She immediately smoothed her expression, offering the same gentle, practiced smile she used whenever you worried.
